Youth Week has been an institution in my home state of NSW for over 20 years and is now a national, week-long celebration for young people (12-25) in every state of Australia.
In addition to participants having their contributions to the community acknowledged and their voices heard on issues of concern to them, Youth Week is also an arena for local talent to make their mark on a sizable audience. This year the one to watch in terms of performance is LaryKan, an artist from the Northern Beaches who’ll be headlining a hip-hop event in the St. George area. I was recently introduced to LaryKan’s music and his realistic songwriting, ear for production and authentic persona (not to mention the passion and determination of his label, Alchemy Music Group) are a breath of fresh air for Australia’s rap scene.
Check back here for LaryKan to feature on my upcoming Go Down Under mixtape (with DJ Leon Smith) but in the meantime, take a listen to “There’s No Question,” LaryKan’s promotional song for Youth Week 2013.
